Felsenbühne Rathen- an outdoor natural theatre

A romantic nature theatre in the midst of the rocky landscape of Saxon Switzerland.

Art and Nature

are on stage as unity.

If art transforms into nature,

then nature acted with art.

Here nature and art form a unity.

"The Basteifestspiele"-

Birth of the natural theatre

When in 1935 the building of this stage was considered by the municipality fathers a great deal of understanding and feeling towards the nature of theatre was a base for such a lucky solution.

By being this way it offered the extraordinary possibility to perform the Karl-May-Festspiele for the first time. Before that time the "Basteispiele" by Arnold Findeisen were successfully performed with approximately 200 locals on the "sands".

"William Tell", "Tiefland", "The Zigeunerbaron" ,and "The Freischütz "ranked among the most visited performances.

The Felsenbühne Rathen is considered as probably the most beautiful natural theatre in Europe.

The tremendous rock massif with its walks along the battlements of the castle Neurathen as well as the steep cliffs of the Wehlturm forms a breathtaking scenery for each single performance.

The valley itself is covered in the green decoration of spruces, pine trees, putrid berry, mountain ash, rowan and form the just right undergrowth to provide space and life for ferns and moss.

Here nature and art form a unity.

Enjoy the adventures of "Winnetou and Old Shatterhand" or the wild romantic opera "The Freischütz".

Friedrich Kind, the poet of the opera " The Freischütz " was inspired by the nearby waterfall "Amselfall" with the "Blackbird hole"(a cave) , where from the entrance’s top the water of the Grünbach (name of a brook) pours down.

Kind enabled this cave the entrance into music history with his world-famous scene The Wolf Ravine. This opera seems to be tailor made for the rock stage.

We invite you to a special theatre experience into the health resort Rathen.
